Morris Lutz House, c. 1849 - Cambridge, ON
This 3-bay Georgian house, made of locally-sourced rubbled limestone, sits along the east bank of the Grand River on Water St.
The American-born Lutz arrived in Galt around 1844 and quickly established himself as a community leader in the new settlement. He became a part-owner of Galt's first foundry and was elected to Galt's first council when it became an incorporated village in 1850.
A few years later, in 1857, Lutz earned the honour of becoming Galt's first mayor when it was given town status. He continued to serve in various capacities on town council until 1872.
Lutz also served as first president of the Galt Mechanics Institute (forerunner of the Galt public library) and was a director of the Gore Mutual Fire Insurance Co..
