On this date in 1934 Cambridge racewalker Stuart Summerhayes was born. Stuart was an ordained Anglican minister who was born in Canada but lived his early years in London England before returning here in 1950. He was an ardent supporter of the first women’s shelter in Cambridge in the early 80s but is probably most recognizable as the race walker who would train on the streets of Cambridge regularly. Stuart didn’t begin race walking until the age of 55 but by the time of his death in 2010 he held 25 Canadian records. He passed away at the age of 76 on Nov. 7 2010. He is a member of the Canadian Masters Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
