On this day in 1900 Cambridge’s Male Athlete of the 20th Century was born in Galt. Normie Himes was a talented baseball player who played on two OBA Championship teams for the Galt Terriers in 1922 and 23 but he is better known for a 10 year NHL career with the New York Americans during the roaring 20’s. He played 402 games and was known as the greatest playmaker in the league. Following his playing days he later coached the Guelph Biltmores and the Galt Red Wings in the OHA. Normie was also the head professional at Westmount Golf and Country Club in Kitchener. He was named Cambridge’s Athlete of the Twentieth Century and was inducted into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. He passed away at the age of 55 in 1958.
