Do you think William Dickson spoke French? Most likely, he did. When he first came to Canada, he resided and worked in the Montreal and Kingston area. The work he did from age fifteen to age twenty was selling provisions to Fur traders many of whom spoke French. Just living in Montreal would require some fluency. But the most telling evidence that may prove this matter is a book presumably owned by Dickson and residing in the Cambridge Archives …

Ferguson cottage is a single-storey Scottish-style home built along the west bank of the Grand River. It was built for blacksmith William Ferguson around 1837, making it one of the oldest buildings in Cambridge. Now owned by the City of Cambridge, the cottage has been home to the Galt Horticultural Society since 1981.

The Galt Armoury, officially named the Col. J.A. McIntosh DSO ED Armoury, was built in 1914 for the 29th Waterloo County Regiment and is the current home of the Highland Fuseliers of Canada. McIntosh was Galt's postmaster for 32 years and served in both World Wars. The Armoury, one of 60 built throughout Canada between 1911 and 1915, stands on the former site of the historic Dumfries Mill, which was a flour mill constructed by town founder …

On this day in 1897 Clarence “Dolly” Dolson was born in Hespeler. He moved to Galt 6 years later. Dolly played 93 games for the Detroit Red Wings from 1928-31 when they were called the Detroit Falcons and he still holds the Red Wing record for the all-time lowest goals against average (1.98). Clarence played junior hockey for Galt when they won the OHA Jr. Northern Hockey league title in 1914-15. He also was a catcher for the Galt Terrier …

Here is a fun fact. Some people will know that Philip Stedman was the first person to purchase Block One of the Haldimand Tract, buying it from Joseph Brant and the Six Nations Confederacy. But what you may not know is that in correspondence (available at the Cambridge Archives) Stedman often referred to his purchase as Stedman Manor. Had he lived to develop and settle the land it would probably be known today as North Stedman Township.

Carved out of the woods only 70 years prior, by the late 1800's, the town of Galt was well on its way to establishing itself as a manufacturing base known as "The Manchester of Canada". One of Galt’s finest baseball players and an Inter-County Baseball legend was born on this date in 1931. Wray Upper was a 13 time all star during a 21 year career with Galt and Brantford. He was a fixture at third base for the Galt Terriers leading the league in hitting in 1958 with a .413 average and as playing manager leading the Terriers to the 1963 Ontario Championship and the 1964 and 1966 Inter-County Championships. This unassuming duplex in Cambridge dates back to 1838 and is actually one of the city's most important historic buildings. It was originally situated on Dickson Street in Galt, around where City Hall sits now. This was the Dumfries Township Hall, built only 16 years after the Village of Galt was carved from the woods at the edge of the Grand River. Who remembers visiting the Reporter building on Ainslie Street? When I was around 10, it was a regular Saturday morning visit to drop off subscription money collected from my delivery route. Many years later, I worked in the advertising department during the final years of the Reporter's existence.

The original Galt Hospital, which predates the current Cambridge Memorial Hospital, was located at the intersection of Avenue Rd. and St. Andrews St. This location was later replaced by the new Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Coronation Boulevard.

First, I want to give a shout out to the good people at Waterloo Generations who have a lot of great information on many of our historical settlers. This post is on two of them, Ephraim Munson and his wife Lucy. As is referenced on the Generations' website, the couple are mentioned in James Young's History when they play host to Absalom Shade and possibly an Indigenous Guide, in July of 1816. Who remembers shopping for records here? The shop on the left of this funky mid-modern Main Street building was the home to Records on Wheels during the early '80s. It was definitely a favoured hangout for me and the place where I started my ever-evolving collection. The RoW store later moved to a spot on Ainslie St. Before closing for good in the early '90s. The James Young Block on Main Street in the Galt area of Cambridge was built in the 1870s. The yellow brick facade stands apart from the granite buildings that surround it, most of which were built 20 years earlier. All of the buildings on this block of Main Street replaced earlier wood-framed shops that were destroyed by a large fire in the early 1850s. If you were an early resident of Galt, chances are you drove under this Birch Street Railroad Bridge that brought you to Water Street and would duck as you went under. Did your dad make you get out to lower the car antenna. Some bikers Taxis and pickups learned quickly not to try.

One of a number of great adaptive re-use projects in a former industrial area of West Galt, the Blacksmith Lofts occupy a late 19th-century factory. The factory was originally used for the manufacture of forges and later furnaces. Central Presbyterian Church in Cambridge is a heritage treasure. Completed in 1882, it stands at 7 Queen’s Square, just above the Grand River in the Galt area. Photo was taken in 1906 as Central’s chime was installed — incorporating 10 bronze bells that were hoisted into an oak frame in the stone tower under the steeple. For more than 100 years, this chime has been played before services and to mark special occasions.

On May 22, 1878, the Empress of India, which had been launched in 1877 and was meant to be a pleasure steamboat on the Grand River, went over the dam at Blain's, resulting in eight fatalities. The accident was attributed to a combination of factors including a problem with the rudder, an increasingly swollen river, and overconfidence.

The Main Street Bridge in Cambridge, Ontario, was built in 1931 as a concrete bowstring arch bridge. It was a Depression-era public works project, funded in part by the Provincial government and designed by Archibald B. Crealock. The bridge connects Melville Street to Water Street, spanning the Grand River.
