Baltimore Oriole
Icterus galbula
Follow on Instagram: @birdnerd150
STATUS: Low Concern
With an estimated population of over 12 million, the Baltimore Oriole remains relatively common. However, the species has experienced a slow but steady decline of approximately 36% since 1966. This trend is largely attributed to habitat loss through deforestation and the widespread use of insecticides.
Often heard before they are seen, male …

I've learned so much about birds in the last 3 years since I started this great hobby! I was really surprised the other day about what I saw and subsequently learned.
I had my camera focused on this Eastern Kingbird, waiting for it to take flight. Suddenly it opened it's mouth really wide as if maybe going to catch something, but instead it regurgitated a pellet!
Apparently a few other birds that eat insects regurgitate pellets which …

I've been seeing a lot of juvenile birds and their parents lately. I'm also getting birds and squirrels visiting my birdbath for drinks and for bathing. I made a video of some of the sights and sounds of mid-June, in case you're interested. It's on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9DqlluFqmM
Rabbits chasing each other, young Robin learning to find its own food, Blue Jay bathing outside my windows. And much more. I understand if you …

Every year, about the first week in June, I start seeing fledgling birds that have just left the nest. If I'm lucky, I'll see an adult feeding a juvie.
The last couple days I've been hearing a chirring or burring kind of sound in the trees. Sometimes I see two or three of these chirring-burring birds together, and they are always very active, chasing each other or flying away.
It's dark birds but they don't sit still long enough to get a …

Huron Natural Area, in Kitchener provides a opportunity to see a Blue Heron Roost with out distrurbing the birds
The Herons picked the nest location wisely as you cannot get close to the nest centered in a large bog (hence quality of image)
This nest has 3 chicks growing quickly

We have an amazing number of birds in Waterloo Region. According to the list in eBird, the most populous groups are wood warblers and waterfowl. Given that this land was originally one huge forest with two or three rivers and many smaller creeks, this makes sense.
Wood-Warblers: 25 species
Waterfowl: 24 species
New World Sparrows: 13 species
Shore Birds: 12 species
Vultures, Hawks, and Allies: 10 species
Woodpeckers: 8 …

Sexing Mourning Doves
I never knew one could tell male and female Mourning Doves apart; I thought both looked all grey. But this spring I've been seeing a dove with a pinkish breast. I put out a birdbath, which attracts them. On the evening of May 18, two doves were on the birdbath.
They did not look the same as you can see from the photo below. I labeled the photos; to see caption, click on photo. The one on the left had a distinct …

Please gather up your kite string and fishing line as these are the greatest peril to our wildlife.
This pigeon had kite string around its ankle ,weaving through its does and feathers on its belly .

This male Northern Cardinal was singing and singing. Another Cardinal on a nearby block answered. One would sing a song and then the other would sing a song. I don't understand Cardinal language, but I wonder if they were negotiating territory.
I've been told that birds sing in spring to claim their territory for a nest and raising young. We are definitely in mating/breeding season. To my human ear, it was just a lovely sound.
