The James Young Block on Main Street in the Galt area of Cambridge was built in the 1870s. The yellow brick facade stands apart from the granite buildings that surround it, most of which were built 20 years earlier. All of the buildings on this block of Main Street replaced earlier wood-framed shops that were destroyed by a large fire in the early 1850s. The Granite Block is a stretch of well-preserved mid-19th century stone commercial buildings on the south side of Main Street. The first section of the block was built in 1851 and shortly afterwards survived a huge fire that destroyed its remaining early-1800s wood frame neighbours.
